What to wear to a family session
Clothes are the question we hear most before a session. A few simple rules make the choice easy.
Pick a palette, not a uniform. Choose two or three colours that sit well together, such as soft greens, warm creams and a touch of rust, and let each person wear a different mix. Everyone matching exactly looks stiff; everyone clashing looks busy.
Keep patterns quiet. One person in a small pattern is lovely. Five people in five bold patterns compete with each other and with faces.
Choose comfort. Children who are comfortable are relaxed, and relaxed children smile. Choose clothes that move, with room to run, sit on the grass and be picked up.
Think about texture. Knits, linen and soft cotton photograph beautifully in natural light and add depth.
Bring a change of layers. A cardigan or scarf lets us vary the look partway through, and keeps everyone warm.
